BACKGROUND

Julie has over 25 years of experience as an educator, coach, and youth sports advocate. Prior to joining UW, she ran a consulting business assisting educational and non-profit clients with strategic planning, grant writing, and project management. She was on the US National Rowing Team as both an athlete and a coach. She currently coaches youth baseball and is a vocal advocate for improving youth access to sport, recreation, and great coaching. She received a B.A. from Georgetown University, an M.Ed. from Harvard, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. She enjoys hiking with her two dogs and cheering respectfully from the sidelines when she watches her three boys play soccer, lacrosse, basketball and baseball.

JULIE TRULY HELPED FENIX SHIFT FROM “YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AAU BASKETBALL PROGRAM” TO A PROGRAM OF “PRINCIPLE & STRUCTURE”. FROM ENCOURAGING ALL FENIX COACHES TO BE FIRST-AID, AED, AND CPR CERTIFIED, TO SHOWING THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER PRACTICE PLANNING, AND INSPIRING US TO DEVELOP “PERSONALIZED DEVELOPMENT PLANS” FOR OUR FENIX ATHLETES (STARTING IN SPRING/SUMMER’19), SHE’S TURNED US INTO A PROGRAM THAT DOES THINGS THE RIGHT WAY. WE CONTINUE TO IMPROVE SEASON BY SEASON, AND IT HELPS TREMENDOUSLY TO HAVE JULIE ON BOARD TO CHALLENGE US EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, TO MAKE SURE WE’RE PROVIDING THE ULTIMATE SPORTS-BASED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU JULIE FOR ALL YOU DO. - VICTOR JOHNSON
