Victor has a diverse background working in sports, entertainment, and hospitality. He spent his early years working in sports marketing for UC Davis and Strategic Lifestyle, a fitness consulting company in Australia. After college, he explored his next phase working in Development for Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Sales/Marketing for the Los Angeles Clippers. In between his “day job”, Victor also volunteered at the Los Angeles Athletic for the John R. Wooden award’s ceremony and events. However, he’s always had a passion for designing basketball experiences and coaching youth, and in 2015 he decided to dedicate his life to making a global impact in sport-based youth development (SBYD). This lead him to start the Fenix Basketball program in Tokyo (2016) and Seattle (2017).
“Basketball has allowed me to experience different roles: as a player, skill trainer, coach, and program leader. I’ve learned the positive and frustrating experiences each of these roles have and I believe the slightest tweaks can shift the entire youth sport landscape. Currently, my efforts are focused on redesigning how we approach the entire youth basketball and youth sport experience in both America and Asia. From coaches, to parents, to community stakeholders, I believe we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to design youth basketball as a form of youth development for our children and public benefit + economic development for our communities. Regardless of race, gender, or economic background, kids should all have the right to practice emotional intelligence, physical literacy, and cultural awareness through sport. It’s a bold vision, but as I compare our America’s efforts to the rest of the world, we have some work to do.” – VICTOR JOHNSON
